Sub Verse is the fifth full-length album from Akron/Family, a trio born of Brooklyn but now split between three western states. It's been a decade since they formed from all-night, caffeine-fueled jam sessions , a span that makes the continued artistic and stylistic restlessness evidenced on Sub Verse that much more rewarding. In the past, they've swung from skewed folk anthems to battering noise aggression, from sidewinding White Album references to Ayler-inspired freakouts. On Sub Verse, guitarist Seth Olinsky tries soul, with mutated and muted doo-wop harmonies chasing him through "When I Was Young." On "Sometimes I," bassist Miles Seaton does his best Scott Walker croon beneath swarm-of-locust strings and synths, taking advantage of producer Randall Dunn's past with darkened squadrons such as Sunn O))) and Earth. Not every Akron experiment is such a success, but where's the thrill of trial that doesn't make room for error? Loamlands open, along with the brilliant sonic tinkerer, M. Geddes Gengras, who plays in Akron/Family these days, too. —Grayson Currin
