Akron/Family listening session with Phil Cook, Catherine Edgerton

When: Sun., Jan. 9, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: Free
Though the fourth album from bicoastal trio Akron/Family isn't due in stores for another month, the Internet has mostly made release dates arbitrary relics. Consider this your chance to hear the sprawling, cumbersomely titled S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT a week or before the online release. Mixing fuzzy psychedelic tones with clinching rock bombast, warped funk with delicate folk introspection, a little soul with a lot of smear, Cosmic Birth is the most scattered record by the band since their debut. That's good news and bad news, then, as the seamlessness of Love Is Simple is swapped for some of the strongest moments and hooks of the band's career. Former Akron/Family member and Megafaun co-founder Phil Cook plays solo, as does Midtown Dickens' Catherine Edgerton. The staff of All Day Records spins. The music starts at 8 p.m.; admission is free. —Grayson Currin
