Horror

Genre fans will appreciate the horror/disaster film hybrid Aftershock, even if the Chilean tourist board doesn't. Horror king Eli Roth (Hostel) plays "Gringo," a young American touring Chile's rave scene with his native pal Ariel. When an earthquake collapses the underground club, Gringo and Ariel escape into Valparaiso's streets and tunnels with three lovely ladies and a trust-fund party boy named "Pollo." After a surprisingly funny first half hour that plays like a hip rom-com, director Nicolás López mashes the fast-forward catastrophe button. Crises include an impending tsunami, a gang of vicious escaped convicts and a tunnel of dead mummy babies. Don't ask. The upside is the film's willingness to break genre rules – people don't die in the manner or order we're accustomed to. The downside: The usual torture porn bullshit of bloodied women in sleeveless t-shirts, and a truly contemptible rape sequence. Excise those scenes, and Aftershock would be a lean and mean b-movie disaster flick.
