Set 1,000 years in the future, this half-baked sci-fi adventure is built around an intriguing notion: What if the planet, as an organism, evolved to to defend itself against the harmful human species? Sadly, the movie goes absolutely nowhere with this premise, focusing instead on father-and-son team Will and Jaden Smith and their futuristic Outward Bound adventure on a treacherous planet that looks like the local state park. All evidence suggests an out-of-control vanity project: The script, a collaboration between Will Smith and director M. Night Shyamalan, has the verve and sophistication of a rejected pulp magazine short story circa 1952. Will stars as stalwart general Cypher Raige—that's right, Cypher Raige—and Jaden is literally a space cadet. One interesting note: Jaden fights off the beasties with a weirdo nanotech Swiss-army sword, and this may be the first sci-fi action picture in the history of the genre that has no guns at all.
