African American Traditions II

When: Sun., June 20, 6 p.m. 2010
Price: $5; or Father's Day-friendly 4-pack for $15

Gravelly basses and silky tenors don't necessarily blend well, but the resulting layers of sound build on top of each other, reaching for something higher. With gospel and barbershop music, The Mighty Gospel Inspirations sing in the jubilee style popular during the early 20th century. The quintet's textured harmonies show that timbres—not timbers—make a place of worship. Mary D. Williams sings spirituals recalling the civil rights movement with a conviction to convert. Storyteller Donna Washington also joins in the evening with African-American traditions. The 6 p.m. show at Southern Village is $5, but pick up a Father's Day-friendly four for $15. —Andrew Ritchey
