Afghan Whigs, Joseph Arthur

When: Tue., Oct. 7, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $30
By riding a raft of sincerity in a sea of aloofness, Greg Dulli earned cult status as a rock frontman in the ’90s. It’s tempting to position his beloved Cincinnati band, The Afghan Whigs, as an early harbinger of R&B’s recent indie rock infiltration, but placing their classic 1993 LP, Gentleman, next to a minimal modern artist like How to Dress Well will quickly kill the idea. Whigs’ sound is burly and full, with coiled-cobra guitars. Their 2014 comeback record, Do to the Beast, remains defiantly heavy. —Jeff Klingman
