Adventure Time Launch Party

When: Sat., Feb. 18, 4-7 p.m. 2012

Local comic book retailer Andrew Neal of Chapel Hill Comics has created a unique promotion for the launch of the comic book version of the Cartoon Network's animated series Adventure Time: He's drawn his own cover for a limited edition available at his shop. Even with a $15 price point, issues of its 500-copy run have been ordered from as far away as Australia, according to Neal.

What has inspired such loyalty? Well, the long version is on the Indy's Artery blog, but there's no good way to describe Adventure Time without using the phrase "seemingly drug-induced." As trippy as Yellow Submarine or H.R. Pufnstuf, it tells of a boy in the magic Land of Ooo (which might be a post-apocalyptic Earth) who always wears a bear hat and hangs out with a talking dog with magical stretching powers, and they have to stop the Ice King from kidnapping Princess Bubblegum and ride around on Lady Rainicorn and help Marceline the Vampire Queen deal with the childhood trauma of her demonic father eating her fries and ... this is as far as we can go without getting into the likes of Lumpy Space Princess or the gender-flipped episode guest-starring Neil Patrick Harris.

Look, go to Artery or ask your kids about this. It's like The Matrix—no one can explain it to you. You'll have to experience it for yourself. Take the opportunity at the 4–7 p.m. launch party. —Zack Smith
