Adult Spelling Bee

When: Fri., Aug. 23, 7-9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
In the first of a proposed "many events mixing entertainment with just a modicum of scholarly endeavor," UNC's humanities department and Flyleaf Books debut their Adult Spelling Bee, a lighthearted evening of orthographical hijinks and humiliations. A single-error-elimination individual competition will be followed by a variety round, with improvised teams competing in collaborative spelling and usage challenges. Prizes will be awarded and beverages (both alcoholic and not) will be on sale. If you don't want to contend, you can still torment contestants with your favorite sesquipedalian word; just bring it on an index card with its definition and your name. We recommend "sesquipedalian." Be warned that the difficulty will be ratcheted up to adult spelling levels—like those really exist anymore—with no electronic devices allowed. Anyone can participate and no preregistration is required, so come and find out just how badly spell-check has wrecked your mind. —Brian Howe
