Adia Victoria, Naked Naps

When: Wed., Aug. 19, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $8-$10
“As a marginally employed, self-driven woman of color,” the Nashville singer-songwriter Adia Victoria told Rolling Stone in January, “there aren’t many microphones being shoved in my face or chances to speak my own truth.” Expect that to change in the next year, as Victoria seems primed and poised to become a star—and deservedly so. Her “Stuck in the South” is a menacing modern blues masterpiece, deftly deploying Dixieland imagery with a perfect admixture of shame and pride. With a voice that curls into a sneer and a wonderfully syncopated electric guitar touch, she conjures Bessie Smith and PJ Harvey, Howlin’ Wolf and a less convivial Alabama Shakes. Don’t expect her to pass this way again in a room of this size. —Grayson Haver Currin
