Dance theater can (and, some would argue, should) include hip-hop theater. Though Rubberbandance Group is still young (it was founded in 2002), it's been getting plenty of attention. Founder Victor Quijada originally danced as a b-boy while growing up in Los Angeles, taking those skills with him as he worked with Twyla Tharp and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal. Dancers dressed for maximum movement and comfort showcase moves inspired by balletic grace and b-boy flair. Setting is sparse, with lighting at times mimicking that of a dance club. Quijada's company will present Loan Sharking (2008), a sort of "greatest hits" that reveals their hip-hop identity, as well as Quijada's own lessons derived from other dance forms. —Sarah Ewald
