ADF & NC Dance Festival Celebrate

When: Wed., June 19, 7 & 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $15

Though North Carolina has counted first-rate choreographers among its citizens for years, American Dance Festival hasn't always known what to do with them. So it's significant that, after a five-year absence (not counting Helen Simoneau's stand in the student omnibus Footprints show last year), regional choreographers get something this week they haven't had in decades: a night on an ADF main stage. In cooperation with the North Carolina Dance Festival, ADF curates an evening of works by some of the state's more accomplished dancemakers. Natalie Marrone explores the folk healing traditions of Italy's stregas in Strega Stories Part II—REVOLT. Cara Hagan's duet Words Apart is set to historical oral narratives on racism, friendship, grief and love from Forsyth County (a clip is at Lindsey Kelley and Mindy Upin explore the delicate nuances of relationships—through the music of Queen—in A Tribute and Reflection of the Relationship. And provocative choreographer John Gamble stages Changeant d'Habit de Sexe, his 2008 consideration of film noir and cross-dressing. —Byron Woods
