Iraq's first metal band, Acrassicauda, was forged in an environment of war. Their story is the stuff of legend, or at least of documentary. The band first gained notice stateside with the release of the acclaimed film Heavy Metal in Baghdad. They've endured a bombed rehearsal studio and death threats from religious zealots, as well as immigration to Syria, Turkey and finally the United States. Somehow, they managed to release an EP, 2010's Only the Dead See the End of the War. Borrowing liberally, but effectively, from American thrash icons, Acrassicauda assembled a cohesive blending of Slayer blast, Metallica mumble and Megadeth melody. If not particularly inventive, it's satisfying, at least. And they do have that story to tell. —Bryan C. Reed
