Re: “Mobile home park residents caught in Catch-22

I believe Mr. Geary report is way off base. Did anyone read Lisa Sorgs Indy related story on December 6, 2006; Abandoned Mobile Homes Plague North Carolina? Her story provided a more objective view of the facts on mobile homes than Mr. Gearys human interest piece.

It is unfortunate when people have to deal with hard times as described in the story no question about it. We should also strive to help those in need or less fortunate than ourselves. However, shouldnt our solution be closer to "teaching" them to fish, rather than providing them with free meal tickets. We need solutions that have a foundation in education and awareness. For instance, when mjisty lost $36,000 a year ago. I hope that she spread the word and was out fighting to put warning labels on mobile homes like we have on cigarettes. Perhaps, we need regulated disclosures like we have in home transaction or stock investments that warn consumers against predatory lending or the significant risk that you will lose all of your investment. Mobile homes (on rented lots) have no place as a solution for a primary residence and is certainly no place for $36,000 worth of hard earned cash.

Should we get rid of the mobile home park - Of course! Why let anyone else fall prey to this situation again. If there is no place for mobile homes to find rented lots then perhaps mobile home dealers will become part of the solution. IF we are concerned about the affordable housing stock in Raleigh, then we should demand that the public officials require the developer to included some or all of the residential units to be affordable. Then it will be up to the current landowner and developer to make the numbers work.

And one other thinganyone who has been able to live in the same place for 34 years and is currently only paying $295 per month in rent is fortunate. But that is another story
