Abigail Williams, Noctomb, Hansgraf

When: Sun., Aug. 19, 8:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $10-12

For the past five years, the cross-country black metal band seemed to be the default opener for most big tours; every few months, they'd arrive in town again, setting the stage for a bigger band or simply taking a slot within a touring package. Don't hold onto that feeling: After this current run of shows takes them through mid-September, Abigail Williams says they'll retire from the road, scattering into new projects. The band always seemed like a stylistic chameleon, a point epitomized by this year's Becoming, an epic, roiling black metal record that attempted to mimic the recent moves of bands like Wolves in the Throne Room and Agalloch but felt largely contrived and ineffective. Perhaps when the pieces break apart, something interesting will come of the whole. Noctomb and Hansgraf open the $10–$12 show at 8:30 p.m. —Grayson Currin
