In the 1950s, Abdullah Ibrahim brought bebop to Cape Town. Fleeing apartheid in 1962, he became Duke Ellington’s protégé before leaping into free jazz with Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. Some 50 albums later, Ibrahim returned to South Africa after Nelson Mandela’s release in 1990 and now splits his time between Cape Town and New York. Along the way, the piano player mastered the flute, sax and cello and became a stunning vocal stylist to boot. His shows are a spiritual experience and a night of rich, layered, beautiful music. —Chris Vitiello
