Aaron Neville, The Blind Boys of Alabama

When: Fri., Oct. 16, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $37-$103.88

In 74 years, Aaron Neville has had several lifetime's worth of misadventures and adventures. He has spent stints in jail and been addicted to drugs. He has become a pop star only to be robbed blind by a record label and then become a genre linchpin responsible for a few foundational records. He's worked with some of music's biggest stars and disappeared for years at the time. He shilled for cotton (you know, the fabric of our lives) and sang spirituals to his God. Now, Neville—who has relocated from New Orleans to New York, remarried after his wife's death and become one gigantic ripple of age-defying septuagenarian muscle—seems poised for a comeback, having recently cut a terrific new record alongside members of the funk-and-jazz crew Soulive. Earlier this year, he played his final show with The Neville Brothers, but that's not due to age or attrition, as his stunning falsetto remains a remarkable quiver that's capable of reflecting all those past instances in an instant. In this terrific double bill, he joins The Blind Boys of Alabama, another American institution at the crossroads of gospel exaltation and secular soul. 8 p.m., $37–$104, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org. —Grayson Haver Currin
