Liam Neeson plays an ex-NYPD cop working as a private investigator in a film based on the mystery series by Lawrence Block. Neeson's Matt Scudder is summoned to the posh townhome of Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens), a drug trafficker whose wife was butchered by a couple of psychopaths despite Kenny paying a $400,000 ransom. Kristo wants vengeance, and he convinces Scudder to help him. The screenplay can get mired in atmospherics to the detriment of plot and some subplots fail to amount to anything meaningful. Still, this is a gritty, cynical neo-noir, like The Big Sleep meets Se7en.
