A view of the prison from the tracks

Central Prison, in operation since December 1884, was built by inmates over 14 years. The first prison in North Carolina, it now houses up to 752 prisoners in close custody, supervised by 1,310 staff members. It is also the location of the state's death row. There are 152 offenders on death row, although North Carolina has not executed a prisoner since 2006.
