Overshadowed in the recent rash of public figures dying was the recent death of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of many of the best Merchant-Ivory films. Jhabvala won her first Oscar for this 1985 surprise hit adaptation of E.M. Forster's classic (she'd later win again for adapting Forster's Howards End), which also provided a breakout role for Helena Bonham Carter and an early spotlight for Daniel Day-Lewis as an uptight Victorian man, the same year he portrayed a gay gang member in My Beautiful Laundrette. (He had range even back then.) Bonham Carter plays Lucy Honeychurch, whose holiday in Florence is disrupted by the presence of an unconventional young man (Julian Sands) disapproved of by her chaperone (Maggie Smith in one of her great pre-Downton Abbey acid-tongued roles). In the wrong hands, this would be stiff drawing-room drama, but it's a rapturously romantic coming-of-age tale, bathed in sunlight and the joy of watching Bonham Carter's character follow her heart. It's not that they don't make films like this any more, it's just that they rarely do it so well—and it's a lovely way to pay tribute to Jhabvala by seeing one of her defining works. —Zack Smith
