A Bronx Tale

When: Thu., Oct. 8, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $37-$130.75

On the Cosmic Calendar, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson's DPAC appearance has been sold out since nanoseconds after the Big Bang (i.e., the first weekend tickets went on sale). The Cosmos host is undoubtedly the biggest draw in downtown Durham this Thursday. But you couldn't ask for a more outstanding alternative than actor Chazz Palminteri performing the one-man-show that became Robert De Niro's directorial debut in 1993. A Bronx Tale, inspired by Palminteri's childhood in the 1960s, finds a young Italian-American man named Calogero torn between his father's honest but meager example and that of the dangerous, glamorous made guys who seem intent on drawing him into their illicit fold. In the film, Palminteri plays Sonny, the local mafia boss who, as a father figure, stands in stark contrast to Calogero's actual father, played by De Niro. But in the solo show, the whole coming-of-age drama, rich with period detail, flows through Palminteri's storytelling chops, honed in dozens of feature films. Though less flashy and epic than the Scorsese gangster films to which it's inevitably compared, A Bronx Tale is more nostalgic, subtle, funny and intimate, and remains well worth seeing, on screen and on stage. 8 p.m., $37$130.75, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, www.carolinatheatre.org. —Brian Howe
