Re: “GOP, N.C. Chamber hatch plan to reduce unemployment benefits, pay state debt

"I am a RN working at a company called Healthways. We were told before Christmas that approximately 110 nurses would be unemployed after Healthways announced they would be closing our call center. It is an action over which we had no control. Most of us have never been unemployed and most of us are diligently looking for employment.

We do not need to lose our homes in addition to losing our jobs! Please don't change the weekly amount of unemployment insurance!"

The simple fact is, you didn't pay one dime to the ESC toward your benefits. It was paid for by the EMPLOYERS. You're lucky to get anything. Unemployment compensation is nothing but welfare. You should have saved money for a rainy day while you were working. Paying people not to work for a ridiculous amount of time is why the ESC fund is insolvent now and you want to just stay on the same course.

Unemployment insurance should be voluntary and PAID FOR BY THE EMPLOYEE. There is absolutely no reason that employers should pay into a program that employees draw benefits from. It doesn't benefit the employer, it benefits the employees so the employees should pay and it should be like any other insurance in that you pay a given premium for a given benefit level. As structured, unemployment is nothing but another welfare program taking money from a group (employers) who derive no benefit from the program.
