Re: “Raleigh Has Made the Shortlist for Amazon’s HQ2

It is still a little astonishing to me that, given the most immediate problem facing both Raleigh and Durham is a lack of affordable housing, the Triangle region launched this bid. One doesn't have to look hard to see the remarkable upward pressure Amazon has imposed on Seattle rents, among the other deleterious outcomes the company has delivered for the city's longtime residents.

And now our local officials may decide to provide incentives for such a development, potentially sacrificing the tax dollars that make up one of the few (modest) justifications for the project. I know that this is exactly what other cities are doing, but man, this isn't a race we should want to win.

Re: “Music Industry Heavy-Hitters Come to Raleigh Tomorrow for the 2018 Dreamfest Living the Dream Conference

Check DAVID HOCKNEY exhibition at MET - This ravishing survey of Hockneys six-decade career is unlikely to make a bigger splash in New York than it did last year in London, where almost half a million people lined up to see it at the Tate Britain. (The Met and the Tate co-organized the show with the Centre Pompidou, in Paris.) Still, it arrives as a revelation, a retort to all the avant-gardist eye-rollers who dismiss the eighty-year-old British artist as, at best, a guilty pleasure.

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Most fans just don't understand that UNC fast paced high possession style of play is what entertains us ...

But for the level of success that means 60 to 70 % of UNC play is the free wheeling.

You can look at that Kentucky win ...That play was won in the gym teaching these guys how to play his way

Kennedy had that ball out before it cleared the net and already getting out of bounds .. he found his 2nd option before anyone really knew what was happening ....all players knew where there assignments were ....Theo became the point guard .and took middle court ...the wings went left and right ...

No play call ..just a well coaches team ...

Or back when ..Mintrece Harrel was crushing us in the post at the close of the Maryland game ...we needed a stop ...

coach puts in Desmond Hubert for one play the whole game ...Desmond goea out ..Harrel attacks Jim and Desmond plays perfect defense gets low and edges Harrel out just a couple feet and Harrel Bricks his shot....time out ...Roy subs Brice back in ..and we win the game
If I recall correctly at the presser Foys when asked about the substitution ..replied ..That's his job

You didn't anyone on the sidelines coaching Desmond on what to do ...hours hours and hours in practice told him

Coach Williams is a tremendous coach who will never be standing on the sidelines calling play after play ....if you want that need to find another team

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

I understand how his detractors feel about the decade long investigation, but I'm also sick of hearing about it. I'm not saying what went in is right but the law as written by the NCAA is that as long as there where no impermissible they had no jurisdiction anyway. But get it this is just another reason for the haters to hate

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Question for the author: Rather than submitting an admonishing defense of Roy, the program and its fans, ever stop to wonder why there might be a lingering pall of discontent? Ever think it may not be a matter of impatience, but rather a question of return on investment? I'm not talking National fan expects, nor wants another Wooden era run. But we're not rubber plants here either. We've invested time (years), money (grands) and a pretty lofty pain in the ass factor in this basketball program...and we've done so for entertainment purposes. But after awhile we develop a critical eye for what and how we define this entertainment of which we're so heavily invested. Anyone being honest will tell you watching Dean coach would make you pull your hair out. Sure, no one better at end of game scenarios...but geeze loooweeze, between the overblown favoritism bestowed seniors and the "one turnover and your yanked" shackled to freshmen...the damn-near death (4-corners) of basketball....the penchant for teaching rather than coaching and the prospect of team before player despite that player being red-hot (or MJ)...the embarrassing delay in playing subs late in a lopsided game. Point being: I don't care how high atop the mountain you are, fans want to be entertained. The complexity of that notion varies with time and yeah, we may grow ungracious with age but that's an earned attitude not a frivolous display of impatience or disloyalty. Roy's a HOFer, but that doesn't mean his aw-shucks demeanor and his "my little finger" shtick doesn't grow stale. It's nothing against Roy or the UNC basketball's just human nature, that's all.

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Roy Williams should have been fired long ago, and not because his team isn't doing well. He should have been tossed because of his refusal to acknowledge that he might have had something to do with the academic scandal that was the big story at UNC for years. Williams consistently acted like nothing untoward had happened; dissed people like Mary Willingham who had reported about fake classes; acted as if he were above the fray; and generally showed himself to be a moral coward who considered himself cleaner than the driven snow. The fact neither the author of this piece, nor anyone on this thread, has bothered to mention this, is a true travesty,

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

I have read and reacted to most of the comments written on this form . First I want to say that I agree 100% with the editors article he wrote about my and hopefully your beloved Tar Heels and Coach Williams. Where were all you hatters at when Duke looses and their Coach never gets disrespected like my forever as long as he wants and dread the day he retires one of two of the greatest coaches UNC ever had and probably ever will!! Look at so many other teams that cannot even win a conference title much less a National Championship!!!

Dont mess with Coach Williams!! He is the heartbeat of the Carolina Blue basketball program and he has proven he bleeds Blue like I do and May He Reign Over The Greatest Basketball Team in The College Ranks!!

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Anyone who honestly believes that Roy Williams should be fired has absolutely no credibility. No knowledgeable college basketball fan expects to win eight out of ten national championships. By that standard there isnt a coach at any program who shouldnt be fired.

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Roy William is one of the best coaches to ever pace a sideline. No argument from me there.

But Roy Williams, just like you and me, is a man. That fact means that he has some imperfections.

These imperfections are not for me to point out because I love the dude for who he is and what he has done for the school that he and I adore.

So, my issue is not with Coach, it is with people like you who beat your chest and think that just because someone does this, that, and the third that they are above and beyond reproach and should never be questioned by mere underlings.

You listen to the 20-something year old fans who are attracted to shinny new things like one-and-done players who are the ones's saying Roy must got. You listen to fans who what to win every game when they are mad but fail to frame the context. You write opinion pieces like this, like it is your call to duty to tell others that they are not entitled to own opinions and have no option of figuring out that they were wrong on their own.

Roy is a little like my teen-age daughter. She is an A-B student and is a great kid whom I love, but she can do some of the craziest things sometimes that tick me off. But even though I am angry and, as a parent, have the right to tell her what to do, it doesn't matter because she is something I have never been or will be; a teen-aged girl. And she always comes back around.

I learned just a few years back, when Roy was being stubborn about not starting Kendall Marshall and we looked like crap in a game vs. Georgia Tech, to just be patient. Not that he is right 100% of the time, but he doggone sure knows what he is doing.

And I will take him over any other coach out there.

I admit, I am not a coach. I am a fan which, remember, is short for fanatic which does not always mean rationale. So give others a break. The could be lol@ncstate fan and just not care.

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Any true Tarheel fan would never consider the removal of Coach Williams. His success since coming back from the dark side (sorry Kansas fans) is off the charts, especially in light of the negative recruiting endured during the African American controversy. I dare say no other coach could have gotten the team(s) through this period with the success he experienced. Coach Williams and his staff take kids with perhaps less physical talent than other schools and mold them into incredible players- I'd say just look at Brice Johnson, Kennedy Meeks and Luke Maye as freshmen and how they evolved as prime examples. He just has the ability to find dadgum kids that love having the opportunity to play for the program. He may be a little old school, may have that streak of stubbornness that confounds the armchair coach, but at the end of the day, no coach in America has had the success he has had since coming home- guy should have the job as long as he wants it and we should shudder at the thought of him being replaced when he decides it's time to hang it up. We love you coach!

Thank you for a decently well written article with some good points and thank you for your passion! Just a note though - Bo Ryan stepped down in 2015. Arguments have more weight if the factual support is accurate.

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

I think the reason you hear Roy must go is because he doesn't coach like most great coaches have done in the so called moment. We all know Roy doesn't like to change his style so he sticks with his game plan and when the other teams have momentum he still won't call timeout. I truly believe he thinks he can wear them all down by not letting any team or any player rest. That can work but in this day and age I think we all know you must adapt and make room for change based on the talent and how the other teams are playing against you. There have been multiple occasions which i have witnessed as a fan that I would bet my paycheck that Roy and UNC could have avoided the loss if he would have just used a couple of more timeouts during the game. We all have our opinions but to me coaching happens not only during practices but also during critical times of every game. After all these are just kids and they don't always keep their focus as you might expect.

Love your support for Roy, and if anyone is unhappy with him, they should have their head examined. But you need to edit the Thad Matta and Bo Ryan comment.

Re: “An Open Letter to Roy Williams’s Haters

Everything is always on the table. Three national championships is what is expected at Carolina, so is 8 out of ten and I admit I've said and continue to believe the option of firing Roy should always be on the table, and for a lot of reasons. His handling of Hairston for one. That being said, I agree with your observations about his ability to mold teams over the course of a season. In that regard he is second to none. All in all Roy has done a great job of winning but there are a lot of negatives as well. Once every player on the team was an African American Studies major? The talent pool has not been to UNC's expectations and that doesn't change based on winning Little by default.
