919 Noise Showcase: Craig Hilton, Arte Povera, Promute, Zach Smith

When: Thu., July 8, 9:30 p.m. 2010
Price: $5

Though the umbrella covering 919 Noise and their local and visiting artists is expansive, the experimental approaches they embrace are often misconstrued as unorganized, brutish or harsh. Asheville musician Zach Smith's work takes exception, with soaring drone explorations akin to Tim Hecker's somber computer music pieces. Rich tones swell and dip, with minor-key melancholy buried in the mix like dream music colored black and blue. Arte Povera, from Boone, delves into ambient space, too. Raleigh guzheng (a Chinese zither) player and electro-acoustic artist Craig Hilton and Carrboro experimenter Promute fill out this fine bill. —Chris Toenes
