5 Seconds of Summer, Hey Violet

When: Thu., Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $20-$91
The disdain shown toward music enjoyed by young women is most obvious when the subject is boy bands, although the crunchy guitar pop of the Australian quartet 5 Seconds of Summer serves as a reminder that The Beatles were pitched to teen girls, too. Switching off on vocals and occasionally borrowing tricks from their countrymen AC/DC to show off their individual instrumental prowess, 5SOS craft spit-shined pop-punk that occasionally gets too cheeky. (The Weezer-leaning new single, “She’s Kinda Hot,” almost veers into negging territory, but thankfully pulls itself out.) Live, they’re goofy and gracious, reveling in their fans’ adoration and offering history lessons via covers of Green Day and The Romantics. —Maura Johnston
