In Brian Helgeland's movie about Jackie Robinson, everything is soft tones and swelling music, victory in the face of adversity, and inspirational sound bites. As is clear from the crisp way that he films a double play, Helgeland could have made a good baseball movie, but the trickier subject of baseball's relationship with racism is outside his grasp. The simple tone and Helgeland's robust embrace of sports movie clichés make 42 feel innocent and a little dumb, but the way it neglects thornier stuff about race and history is offensive.
