2010 Triangle Blues Society Blues Challenge

When: Sat., Sept. 25, 7 p.m.-12 a.m. 2010

Triangle Blues Society holds its annual Blues Challenge this evening while Ted Turner tends his buffalo in Montana, unaware that TBS is appropriating his namesake acronym. Last year, Th' Bullfrog Willard McGhee won in the solo/ duo category with his delicate fingerpicking and gravely voice—a modern-day Dave Van Ronk. And a rocking blues that featured scorching electric guitar and thundering vocals earned the Fat Bastard Blues Band top prize among bands. Much of North Carolina's blues history lies with the Piedmont blues of Blind Boy Fuller, but competitors here cover a large swath of blues styles. There's no one source of pain, and there's no one sound of blues. Winners this year qualify for, and receive money to travel to, the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. —Andrew Ritchey
