1812 Overture: Classic Celebrations (NC Symphony)

When: Sat., July 6, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $28-32

If Handel were still alive, imagine the royalties he'd earn each July. The North Carolina Symphony ignores the colonial irony and celebrates the nation's independence with excerpts from Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks," as well as Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." Under William Henry Curry's direction, the Concert Singers of Cary join the symphony for Handel's other great seasonal favorite, the "Hallelujah Chorus" of Messiah, which likewise would have cranked out the royalties every December. Works by Wagner and Verdi round out the program. —Chris Vitiello
