10 Years of Hyperdub with Kode 9, DJ Spinn, Taso and Scratcha DVA

When: Tue., Sept. 16, 6 p.m. 2014
Price: $12
Before dubstep meant Skrillex and the like (Note: There's nothing wrong with that meaning, since "techno" once meant spare futurist dance music from Detroit, anyway), it stood for something a little different. Yes, it was electronica-informed, with atmospheric beats and heavy bass, but it wasn't just bass. The "dub" part of the subgenre made some sense, referring to the weed-heavy percussion that offered a dungeon's echo of dub reggae, paired with patient, artful two-step beats. At the forefront of dubstep's rainy-day U.K. incarnation was the arty record label Hyperdub, founded in 2004 and subsequently introducing the wider world to artists like Burial, Joker and Zomby. Along the way, they picked up non-dubstep, very-out-there electronic musicians like Fatima Al Qadiri, Hype Williams and the late DJ Rashad. Hyberdub heroes Kode9, DJ Spinn, Taso and Scratcha DVA come through to celebrate the label's 10th anniversary. —Brandon Soderberg
