My vow to eat light at DeeLuxe Chicken’s media preview on Monday immediately flew the coop once baskets of fried chicken and fish platters paraded from the kitchen. I love fried chicken, and with weather forecasts of "cones of uncertainty," I bee-lined to the counter to get my comfort-food fill. A platter of “Mighty Fine” fried chicken plus two sides, including spicy Asian cucumbers and Velveeta mac and cheese, fit the bill nicely.

DeeLuxe Chicken (1116 Broad Street, Durham) is the latest restaurant from Scott Howell, who recently closed his beloved Durham fine dining restaurant Nana's. Howell and his business partner, restaurateur Rick Robinson, open their fast-casual fried-chicken joint today, with hopes of remaining open through tomorrow (updates to follow).

In addition to fried chicken, seafood, and classic Southern sides, the menu also includes lighter fare such as mojo-marinated grilled chicken breast, salads, and sandwiches, including the vegetarian friendly Portobello Fantasy Burger. Even familiar sides have an unexpected twist, like the spicy Asian cucumbers, a mix of cucumbers, jalapeno, and cilantro in a fiery sauce. DeeLuxe’s fried chicken is delicately spiced and dare I say, dee-licious, delivering a satisfyingly crunchy crust with tender meat within. The restaurant’s sauce station features a dozen signature creations; I paired my fried chicken with a spicy Alabama white sauce.

The restaurant’s retro vibe comes from signs reminiscent of a vintage diner and clear-globe light fixtures befitting seventies-era lamps. Diners can order at the counter and then grab a table inside, out on the patio (weather permitting), or at the bar, where you'll find eight taps dedicated to N.C. brews, bottled and canned beers, and a wine list that includes bubbles and sake.

DeeLuxe Chicken will be open for business Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Except maybe, you know, during the hurricane.
