Here are three loving ways to help Durham's Urban Ministries in February

Here comes February, which means Valentine's Day, which means you're likely to be wracking your brain for something to get your sweetie in just a couple of weeks.

On top of that, you may be annoyed and put off by the crass Hallmark commercialism of Valentine's Day in the first place. Grrrrr.

We're here to help. Bryan Gilmer, director of marketing & development at Urban Ministries of Durham, has  a great suggestion for you that will delight your loved one, and help some folks who really need it.

It's the No. 2 item here on a list of three ways you can help the organization provide "food, shelter and a future" in the coming weeks.

From Gilmer:

  • Please 1) buy tickets today and 2) forward this to all your friends to join us at Empty Bowls, our signature special event at the Durham Convention Center the evening of March 3. Sample soups from more than a dozen top chefs, and with certain tickets, pick an artist-made bowl to take home with you. The family-friendly festival atmosphere is so much fun, and for our 10th anniversary year, we're trying to raise a record $100,000.
  • Show your sweetie you care with some sweet harmonies from Heart of Carolina Chorus, which is again doing singing Valentines to benefit the work of UMD.  For $60, a quartet will visit the recipient at home or work in Durham, Chapel Hill or RTP, sing two love songs and present a rose. If the recipient is out of town, the guys will deliver the two songs via phone or Skype for just $25. Reserve yours now!
  • The UMD Food Pantry is very low on dry pasta, red pasta sauce (in cans or plastic jars, please, not glass), and canned fruit. You can drop these items by our Resource Center at 410 Liberty St. M-F 9-6 or Sat 9-2, or have them shipped directly with a few clicks using our Amazon Wishlist.

Thanks, and we heart you.

"Incredibly racist" strikes me as a bit harsh (not to mention a bit simplistic)

Sure. It's because it refers to a well-known racist stereotype.
