Carrboro's Southern Rail to reopen with barbecue restaurant CrossTies, The Station to remain a music venue

At the end of December, Carrboro's Southern Rail closed hastily after many months of money troubles. Community members  mourned the loss of its Station, especially, a hub for free music and rowdy, low-frills fun. Today, Andrew Moore, owner of the nearby restaurant Venable, announced his plans for the spaces that The Station, Southern Rail and The Tiger Room all called home.

Moore's new establishment will be the barbecue-focused CrossTies. (A train joke!) Moore, who owns both Venable and B-Side Lounge in Carr Mill Mall, says a lack of Carrboro barbecue and the space's history inspired the new direction.

"We saw a need," Moore says. "I also love barbecue and think it fits the space very well, because it's kind of a historic North Carolina building. What better to do than do a North Carolina signature food?”

CrossTies should be open in early May, Moore says, with the expansion of the kitchen being the biggest renovation requirement. Even sooner than that, though, Moore will reopen The Station—before people really start to forget about it, he hopes. Functionally, Moore says he'll keep it more or less the same, as a rock room with free gigs many nights each week.

“We felt like it was a really cool part of the community that we wanted to keep alive," he explains.

Right now, Moore and his crew are hustling to upgrade The Station to open by mid-March. Those new flourishes include a re-finished bar and floor, fresh paint, additional draught selections and more. Moore hopes to bring bigger shows to the stage a few times a year, too, perhaps drawing attention to what could sometimes seem an overlooked Carrboro attraction.
