N.C. clergy to call for Lowe's to apologize for pulling All-American Muslim ads

Posted by Joe Schwartz on Mon, Dec 19, 2011 at 3:15 PM

An interfaith group of North Carolina clergy members will deliver a petition at Lowe's headquarters in Morrisville Mooresville on Tuesday demanding that the home improvement giant apologize for removing ads from TLC's All-American Muslim TV show.

The petition, which organizers say has 200,000 signatures, will be presented at 11:30 a.m. at 1000 Lowe's Boulevard.

TLC's reality show follows a Muslim family in Dearborn, Michigan. Lowe's pulled advertising last week after pressure from groups who claimed that the show is doing damage by not presenting Muslims as extremists, Huffington Post reports.

"Lowe's decision to remove its ads from the show All-American Muslim demonstrated to the Muslim American community that bigotry and ignorance are alive and well in the United States," Maha Hilal, who launched one of serveral petitions on Change.org, stated in a press release.

"Despite Lowe's decision, it is clear from the support my petition has received that many Americans want an apology from Lowe's. Through this support, we can truly see the values that Americans stand for: tolerance, understanding, mutual respect, and, most of all, speaking out when these values have been compromised."

Earlier this week, 100 people protested at a Lowe's in a Detroit suburb nearby where the show is filmed.

There's a difference between having the right to do something & being right in doing something. The protest is about the latter. No different than Lowe's justification. One just happens to advocate fairness and the other advocates bigotry.

Also, Lowe's is a commercial business with Muslim customers, as demonstrated by the fact that a protest happened near the filming location (an area known for its Muslim citizens). They should know better and can't claim ignorance as an excuse.

... why should Lowes have to apologize for anything? If Lowes did not want to advertise on a media outlet then the decision should have come before buying time or an ad space, that is the only mistake Lowes has made.

Very good analysis. One thing that is very clear is that Beverly Perdue is shopping for a job.
