Chapel Hill Town Councilwoman Sally Greene won’t seek re-election and will instead endorse colleague Donna Bell and planning board member Jason Baker, she announced this morning via her personal blog.

Greene served two terms, eight years on the council. In her “Thank you, Chapel Hill,” blog post, she listed the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness, inclusionary zoning to provide affordable housing and work to preserve historic neighborhoods and green space as her proudest accomplishments.

“All of this, and much more that we have accomplished since 2003, is the product of tremendous collaborative work by citizens and residents of our community who believe in working together through government for the common good,” she posted. “It has been an absolute honor to be part of this important work.”

With Greene’s seat up for grabs, the candidate field could grow more crowded before the July 15 deadline to submit paperwork.

Along with Baker, Augustus Cho, Laney Dale and Lee Storrow all have filed for office. Jon DeHart has also stated his intent to run.

Bell, who was appointed to fill the council vacancy left two years ago by Mark Kleinschmidt when he became mayor, must run her first campaign. Incumbents Jim Ward and Matt Czajkowski are yet to file for re-election.
