Civil rights lawyer Ashley Osment passes away at 46

Posted by Joe Schwartz on Tue, Jun 1, 2010 at 2:46 PM

Ashley Osment, the senior attorney at the UNC School of Law's Center for Civil Rights who spent her life fighting discrimination, misconduct and advocating for education, died this weekend after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 46.

Osment was well-known locally both for her casework and for managing the Internationalist Book Store.

Her husband and law partner, Al McSurely, offers a poignant and fitting obituary at the Political Agitator Blog.

In August, Osment became a regular columnist for The Chapel Hill News , where she wrote courageously about her illness. Today the paper published a story on Osment's death and offers links to her columns.

Ruby Sinreich remembers her friend at Orangepolitics.com calling Osment, "one of the best human beings I've ever met."

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Bible Church.

Very good analysis. One thing that is very clear is that Beverly Perdue is shopping for a job.
