Complaint filed against Cary's Jennifer Robinson

Posted by Lisa Sorg on Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 3:47 PM

A Wake County voter has filed a complaint with the state board of elections regarding District A Cary Town Councilwoman Jennifer Robinson's campaign finance reports. Read the complaint here:

In his complaint, Van W. Kloempken formerly of DavisHighHouse.org , a citizens' group supporting Lori Bush, Robinson's challenger, raises questions about Robinson's seemingly feeble campaign finances--feeble, , until after the mandatory reporting period passes.

He uses the 2005 campaign as an example, when she reported that she received just $295 during the election cycle as of Sept. 1.Then after the mandatory reporting period, she raised more than $16,000. Kloempken alleges Robinson, a Republican, either accepted donations and held them until after the reporting deadline passed or her backers were told to wait until after the deadline to write checks. He contends that the delay helped Robinson, in that it kept the public from knowing her who backers are.

In an interview with the Indy, Robinson vigorously denied withholding financial information until after the reporting period. "To say they were held or manipulated to deceive people is completely false," Robinson said. "The way I run my campaign is I raise only what I need. I determine what my expenses are and I shoot out an e-mail saying, 'I have these expenses to pay.'"

As for her contributions from developers, Robinson said, "No contribution would influence me to make a decision."

In this election, Robinson reported raising $1,450 as of Sept. 1. Her latest report is online on the Indy's election page.

The State Board of Elections has investigated the claim and found it to be without merit.

IndyWeek should ashamed for providing tacit support for such a sham political stunt and instead lobby legislators to change the law.*Don Hyatt Hi Don! Up to your old neo-con Republican Tea Bag Glenn Beck tricks again! I am suprise that you didn't tell the public that you are Robinson Campaign Corporate manager in drag. By the way, since when have you decided that filing complaints with the Board of Elections is a Communist trick to stop Republicans in a unfair and unbalance elections. Gosh! I remember your little group of neo-con republican thugs filing 20 election complaints against my wife in her last Judical campaign and even try to lock me up for voting with your phony complaints to the board of election and the North Carolina Bar. As usual, it didn't work with your brilliant republican campaign tactics......lol..By the way, I am happy to see you have clean up you act with your recent Brokenback Mountain Republican victory to your political post as a up and coming city council dude who loves corporate money. Have a nice day and remember, I still have all of those 3000 e-mails you sent to me threaten to kick my butt if I ever show up at City Hall...lol ps.. It appears those therapy anger managerment sessions haven't change you very much for the past couple of years......

Kloempkin and Thor's attempts to slander Mrs. Robinson and Sinkez' reputation are disgusting and disgraceful. Davis and High House must be proud. Raleigh and Durham have the Bloods and Crips. Cary has Davis and High House!

We had notified Ms. Sorg that Mr. Kloempken is not a member of Davis and High House as previously reported. We see that that change has been made. That aside, we don't understand, the verbal attacks on Ms. Sorg for reporting the news. Matt Young, DHH

Unfortunately this article is incomplete without mentioning that Mr. Van Kloempken is himself willing to violate citizens and bypass an appropriate process by which their input can be considered and valued. At least, as reported by their own organization. http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid:394618 As a founding member of DHH, he takes issue with Ms. Robinson's position and decision on the project. However when his own pocketbook is affected, he fails to offer Durham citizens the very same courtesy he expects. The complaint of someone with such an unstable definition of what's right and wrong is hardly credible. Unfortunately people can accuse even the innocent and get it into the headlines. I hope they'll be "brave" enough to print it when the Board of Elections dismisses this baseless charge.

Mr. Hyatt, It is very important for voters to understand who finances candidates' campaigns. Ms. Robinson's method, although legal, circumvents the voters need to know. For example, it is important for voters to understand that Jeniffer's donors were/are involved in 3 law suits with District A voters - Cameron Ponds, Amward Homes et al., and Orum Crosland at Davis and High House. In other words, Ms. Robinson is accepting money from donors that the very voters she is supposed to represent allege did them harm! VOters should also know that her donors benefit from her stance on impact fees and a road improvement waiver that she approved. I thank the Indy Weekly for being brave enough to report this important information. Karl Thor

@Don: Reporting on an official complaint sent to the N.C. Board of Elections is not tacit support of a "political stunt." It's merely reporting the news. And we did seek comment from Jennifer Robinson, which she gave us. If the tables had been turned, we would have handled the story in the same way.

Mr Hyatt you make a very good point. DHH is incapable on intelligent thought. They are nothing more than fear mongers. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Filing a complaint against the Robinson campaign is a desperate political stunt. Van's complaint should be directed at the legislators who pass campaign finance laws and not at the Robinson campaign, which is simply following the existing law. It's pretty sad when issues can't win the day and surrogates for another candidate resort to flimsy accusations which stand no chance of being acted on. IndyWeek should ashamed for providing tacit support for such a sham political stunt and instead lobby legislators to change the law.
