Tar Heels name Everett Withers interim head coach

Posted by on Thu, Jul 28, 2011 at 8:18 PM

UNC has a head football coach again.

UNC coach Everett Withers
The University announced through a press release late Thursday afternoon that Everett Withers, who had been defensive coordinator and secondary coach, will replace Butch Davis who was fired on Wednesday.

Withers will have “interim” in front of his title.

“We’ve selected Everett Withers to lead the football program,” athletic director Dickie Baddour said. “The Chancellor and I spoke with him this afternoon and we believe he has the leadership qualities to help our student-athletes deal with the challenges ahead. We are fortunate to have someone with his credentials and background. He is ready for this position.”

Chancellor Holden Thorp said he was happy with the hire.

“I believe Everett is the right person for our football program under these challenging circumstances,” Thorp said. “I am impressed with the relationships he has built with our players and staff, and it is our top priority to help our student-athletes going forward. I believe he can help our students succeed at the highest level both on and off the field and in the classroom.”

Withers, who will meet with the media on Friday afternoon, was also quoted in the release.

“I’m excited for this opportunity and I’m honored the Chancellor and Dick Baddour have faith in me to do this job,” Withers said. “I realize this appointment is coming during a tough transition for our football players and staff. My job and the job of our assistant coaches is to prepare these students to perform at the highest level this season. I love Carolina and this community, and I will do everything I can to make the Tar Heel fans proud of this team.”

A Charlotte native, Withers has been UNC’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach the last three seasons. Last season, the defense ranked fourth in the ACC and 30th in the country.

With Withers’ promotion, the staff will be adding another assistant coach.
