Mudcats beat division champ Tennessee 5-4 in 10

Denis Phipps singled home Jake Kahaulelio with nobody out in the 10th, giving the Carolina Mudcats a 5-4 win over the visiting Tennessee Smokies in the opener of their season-ending four-game series at Five County Stadium.

Kahaulelio had doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third in Brandon Yarbrough’s single.

The result gave the win to Ruben Medina (4-1), while Esmalin Caridad (0-1) took the loss.

Phipps also had a double for Carolina. Felix Perez led the Mudcats at the plate with three hits including a homer for two RBI.

Steve Clevenger had three doubles and scored twice for Tennessee, which won both halves in the Southern League’s North Division and will finish with the league’s best record.
