Sands' homer helps Chattanooga take series opener over Mudcats

The Carolina Mudcats dropped back below .500 in the second half and made the road crowd happy, losing their July 4 game with the Chattanooga Lookouts 8-4.

Clayton product Jerry Sands had three hits including a three-run homer with five RBI for Chattanooga. Corey Smith added a 4-for-4 performance with one RBI.

Carlos Mendez went 4-for-4 including a double for the Mudcats.

Mario Alvarez (5-3) gave up all the Mudcats’ runs and was the winning pitcher, while Jon Huber collected his eighth save.

Scott Carroll (1-4) took the loss.
