Durham Bulls strand 17 in defeat at Gwinnett

The Durham Bulls left an unlikely 17 runners on base Monday night, dropping a 7-2 road decision to the Gwinnett Braves.

Gwinnett is in second place in the International League’s South Division, trailing the Bulls by 9 ½ games.

Joe Thurston led Gwinnett at the plate with a double and a single for three RBI.

Michael Dunn (2-0) was the winning pitcher, while Dale Thayer (0-1) gave up five runs in the eighth to take the loss.

Matt Joyce and J.J. Furmaniak each had three hits for the Bulls.

In other news involving the Bulls, outfielder Desmond Jennings was named IL batter of the week for games ending Sunday.

Heath Phillips (L, 6-4, 3.76) vs. Tim Gustafson (R, 5-4, 5.40)
