ACC Tourney, Friday open thread

Posted by David Fellerath on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 2:35 PM

Well, as correspondent Adam Sobsey just emailed me, this second Friday of March should be a state-wide holiday.

There was some basketball yesterday: NC State is done for the season, while Clemson's NCAA seeding probably took a big hit with that loss to Georgia Tech, while Virginia Tech polished off Miami's NCAA hopes before scaring the bejesus out of UNC earlier this afternoon.

Ex-Indyite Besha Rodell is at courtside for Creative Loafing Atlanta—we hope to have new posts from her today. Besha? Let us know in the comments.

What's your take on the empty seats at the Georgia Dome? The future of N.C. State? Will Ty Lawson play tomorrow? Should he play tomorrow?

And finally, one of our readers Twittered (Tweeted?) the following:

RT @mtdotnet wonders when the ACC champions stopped being decided by winning the ACC championship (I'm looking at you, @indyweek).

As I look over the scores this morning I'll add Baylor, Southern Cal, and the A-10 winner (Temple/Duquesne) to the long list of bid-stealers. I'm afraid that Maryland will need a win today, they're looking up at a number of teams who are fighting for fewer spots than normal.

Well, as is always important we'll have to see what some other teams that could "steal" bids do. Cleveland St. has already thinned the bubble by one, if Oklahoma St continues to ride through the Big 12 tournament and the SEC Tournament winner isn't LSU or Tennessee the bubble could thin by two more teams. They're definitely in the conversation and playing BC or Duke close will help. A win and they're pretty much in but they have to be liking their chances especially since fellow ACC bubble dwellers Miami and VT couldn't get it done. I do like the Terps' overall resume, with wins over Mich St, UNC and now Wake. BC did get their one win and can rest easy whether or not they beat Duke.

Ryan: You said Maryland needs two wins.... If they pull out this game against Wake, do you think they're in, regardless of what they do versus Duke/ BC? df

In response to the tweet, I'm old school and believe that a season of work is worth as much or more than one hot weekend. That said winning the tournament is an accomplishment that shouldn't be slighted. It is a stastical fact the streaks going into the NCAA tourney are meaningless, so for a team with dare I say more lofty goals than an ACC tournament title it is somewhat unimportant. To retweet, my response would be 1975, when more teams were invited than won their conference tournament. In another interesting note Tyler seller was infinitely effective today using 0 possessions (2 FGA's & 2 ORb's) to score 4 points (ORtg=4/0)

They'll see how Lawson is in the morning, but I seriously doubt he'll play this weekend. Why risk it? The Heels have likely cemented the No. 1 overall seed with this win since Pitt, UConn, Oklahoma and Kansas all lost in their tourny's. Even more interesting, if Duke wins out they are in the discussion for a No. 1 seed. Not sure I would agree with it if they do earn one unless they beat Carolina in the finals. After all, Duke was swept by UNC, lost to Wake and Clemson. Although they did sweep FSU, they only beat one of the top two ACC teams (Wake) once out of four tries. Not sure what I think about the controversial jump-ball. It looked like the jump ball came before what looked like a Hansbrough foul, but the refs seemed to swallow their whistles quite a bit. Seth Greenberg needs to be careful. VA Tech had their chance and blew it. They still had a couple shots to tie or win the game.

Let me begin by saying Ty Lawson should absolutely not play tomorrow. The Heels are now further into their conference tournament than any other team that had previously cemented a No. 1 seed (forgive me Louisville and Memphis). The Heels' position in the NCAA's is safe and Ty can rest easy until next Thursday or Friday night.

I just got out of the press conference with Roy, Tyler and Bobby and Roy said it is unlikely Ty will play tomorrow. Can't say for sure though. Some funny back and forth over that late jump ball call from both Roy and Seth Greenburg. I will be posting about that and more after the GA Tech game and again tonight after the end of the Duke game at Clatl.com/sports.
