Rumor: Mansion 462 closing?

While reporting this week’s story on the conversion of Chapel Hill dance hall Players to a part-time rock club, we heard whispers from a few folks that Mansion 462—the West Franklin Street room that opened last January between Chapel Hill anchors Local 506 and The Cave—was closing. Apparently, several bands had been emailing other area clubs to reschedule dates dropped from Mansion 462’s calendar. Co-owner Brad Waycaster confirms that the club did drop several shows, but he says Mansion 462 isn't going anywhere.

“We’re going to pick and choose as opposed to booking every day,” says Waycaster, adding that—for the past 18 months—the club would take its chances on unheard out-of-town bands simply because the owners liked the music and wanted to offer an  open area stage. “We can’t make the numbers work anymore, so we’re not able to commit to that.”

Mansion 462 will now book between two and four nights of music each week and continue to host a spoken word and comedy show every Monday. Waycaster notes the space remains open for private events, like Matt Vooris’ Rock Camp finale last week, and that the space has no plans to become a full-time bar.

“We’re just developing a new business plan that will work,” says Waycaster.

Stay tuned…

Went by the place last night for the once-monthly blues jam, which was a weekly thing just a year ago. Instead: lights off, doors locked, no booze and no blues. Sure feels like we're losing a venue, and if there's no jam there, then it's gone from me.
