Bachmann, Stamey, Rosebuds, etc: Duke Performances announces summer schedule, rules

Posted by Grayson Currin on Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 11:03 AM

Pull out your planners or your iPhones or however it is you keep track of what you'll be doing in a few weeks, and jot down the dates of Duke Performance's Music in the Gardens series. Mixing stand-alone bills featuring area favorites like Eric Bachmann and Dex Romweber with new local lights like The Love Language and Megafaun, the series represents another coup for Duke's ground-level, plugged-in booking under the leadership of Aaron Greenwald. All shows begin at 7 p.m. in or around the Duke Gardens, and each shows cost $10 for the public and $5 for Duke employees. Duke students and children under 12 get in for free. A rad series for the right price.

May 20: Ciompi Quartet with soprano Sandra Cotton

May 27: Ciompi Quartet with Emory University's Vega String Quartet and oboist Joe Robinson

June 3: Thad Cockrell

June 10: The Rosebuds

June 17: Megafaun

June 24: Alina Simone

July 1: Dex Romweber Duo

July 8: Mallarme Chamber Players and Brussels Chamber Orchestra

July 15: The Love Language

July 22: Eric Bachmann (of Crooked Fingers/ Archers of Loaf)

July 29: Chris Stamey & Peter Holsapple

Though, I will give them credit for that T's/VVLL/Schooner bill opening for Joan Jett

This is what a summer concert series should be, not Downtown Live

Hey Karen— Yup, looks like it does. The series "showcases the best of local chamber music and independent rock—two genres in which the Piedmont excels." I suppose they wanted to keep to that theme.

Nice line up. Does the series really end on July 29? I would have thought they'd add a little jazz or blues.

Actually, I don't anymore. This paper's pointed out that now moot point several times in the past, and this is—after all—a listing of an upcoming concert schedule, not a feature on the band. But good look, though.

Full disclosure: Music Editor Grayson Currin owns a record label with Megafaun's Brad Cook.
