Briefly: Bleeding Hearts on Little Steven comp; Spider Bags, Portastatic help WFMU; Mammoth Records celebration
—The Bleeding Hearts & Little Steven, cont.; WFMU marathon benefit; Mammoth Records turns 21
—Little Steven Van Zandt—who you might know from his role in The Sopranos, his role in Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band, or his role as the host of his own satellite radio show—has been spinning "Rehab Girl," a cut from The Bleeding Heart's second record, since last August. Now, Steven has added the tune to the eighth volume of his The Coolest Songs in the World series, available digitally now. Other artists included: David Bowie, The Pete Best Band, The Resistoleros and a dozen more.
—"WFMU is the only place in the world that would give us the freedom that makes the show what it is," radio host Tom Scharpling said in a recent e-mail promoting his three-hour show on the New Jersey station last night. Scharpling's show came as part of WFMU's 2009 fundraising marathon. Each listener donating more than $75 received a little package Scharpling calls WFMU's Mirth, Music & Mayhem: A Premium in Three Parts. The goods included a tote bag, but the real bonus came as a double-disc set featuring the comedy of Scharpling & Jon Wurster (which we've written about here and here) and (apparently) a tribute to Paul and Linda McCartney's record Ram entitled Tom. Locals Portastatic and Spider Bags guest, along with Death Cab for Cutie, Aimee Mann, Danielson and a whole lot of other folks. Thing is, last night was (allegedly) your last chance to get it, so be on the lookout for it in used bins. Meanwhile, you should still donate to WFMU, one of the nation's real independent media treasures. Tune in Friday at 8 p.m. as Yo La Tengo tackles covers to support the marathon, and get ready to offer some support.
–Mammoth Records—the Chapel Hill label that sold itself to Disney in 1997 and withered on the vine thereafter—will celebrate its 21st birthday Saturday, April 25, at Cat's Cradle with some of its old label stalwarts and alumni. So far, Katharine Whalen of Squirrel Nut Zippers is set to deliver some tunes, as well as Blake Babies' John P. Strohm and Seven Mary Three's Jason Ross and Thomas Juliano. Dillon Fence, still playing sporadic gigs after reforming for its MoRisen compilation, headlines. Several former employees are part of a social network with which you can interact in anticipation of the show.
