Superchunk announces new EP ... plans new LP?
Yesterday, Pitchfork Media broke the news of Leaves in the Gutter, a five-track Superchunk EP due in April on Merge. The quartet hasn't released a full album of new studio work since 2001's Here's to Shutting Up, though a rarities comp, four live releases, a Destiny's child cover and a 7" for Aqua Teen Hunger Force have all kept 'Chunk on the right side of active.
Earlier this afternoon, Mac McCaughan took some time to answer some questions about the EP and the future of Superchunk. "By having this out there, we can play some of these songs live and people will have heard them," says McCaughan, "and we can also hopefully get to work on the next thing." It looks like we'll have a new album on our hands ... sometime? Leaves in the Gutter tracklist and more from MacMc after the jump.

"The songs on the EP were all written and recorded at various times between 2004 and now. Essentially, when we do the occasional show, it's nice to have a new song, so we'll get together and work one out if we have time. There are a couple others from this same time period that we wrote and played live but never recorded. But then we'd never had an excuse to put these out, and since we're doing Coachella and since XX Merge is this summer, it seemed like it was past about time for a new release.
I also felt like, if we're ever going to get on with the business of making a new record, we needed first to clear the decks of these songs. I really like them a lot but a couple of them feel like they are from another era already and likely won't fit on a new album, anyway. By having this out there, we can play some of these songs live and people will have heard them, and we can also hopefully get to work on the next thing."
