Briefly: The Foreign Exchange Live, Loners' Release, BOA Studio Blog

Posted by Grayson Currin on Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 7:24 AM

Foreign Exchange, Cat's Cradle, April 17; The Loners, Tir Na Nog, March 6; New Birds of Avalon tunes

-Durham's Phonte Coleman and Wilmington-via-The Netherlands' Nicolay Rook—together, The Foreign Exchange—finally make their Triangle club debut Friday, April 17, at Cat's Cradle. The duo's sophomore album, Leave It All Behind, received high marks here, and "Daykeeper" is currently streaming in our Music Player. The Foreign Exchange played UNC-Chapel Hill's Stone Center in November, as reviewed here.

-Raleigh's The Loners will release its second album, Revolution!, via Churchkey Records and a three-band blast Friday, March 6, at Tir Na Nog. Dirty Little Heaters and Pinche Gringo join that bill. Hear several new tracks from Revolution!, which will be released on LP and MP3 only, at Reverb Nation. It's interesting to watch as Tir Na Nog increasingly transitions from a one-day-per-week Triangle rock host to an actual venue. That is, just two years ago, this show would have been part of King's closing month. We're lucky to have it.

-Birds of Avalon has a new single, "(Your) Lucky Day," available via the Volcom Ent. 7" Club (which has confirmed Harvey Milk and Double Negative for contributions this year). Hear it here. What's more, the band's got a whole slew of studio updates regarding the recording of its second full-length, due sometime this year. The record looks to be mixed and mastered. Read all about it here. Check Karen Mann's video of BOA from last weekend's Double Barrel Benefit here.

  • Future Islands' On the Water

The third full-length from Future Islands slows and stabilizes the band's formerly relentless dance beats and gets very serious about the heart, hope and the entirely unforgiving quest to make it into adulthood. (Thrill Jockey Records)

The three tracks on the debut release from Chapel Hill scene-vet sextet Some Army are more concerned with the romantic, slow-build-and-burn side of psychedelic rock than with loud entrances and quick exits. (Breakfast Mascot Records)
