Mike Lee, Sendolo Diaminah, Matt Sears likely winners in Durham school board race

Posted by on Tue, May 6, 2014 at 10:21 PM

Sendolo Diaminah didn't raise the most money in the District 2 Durham school board race, but he received the most votes, and appears to be the winner in the high-profile contest.

With 61 of 63 precincts reporting—the provisional and transfer ballots have yet to be counted—Diaminah, a community organizer, had 2,916 votes, or 44 percent of the vote.

Donald Hughes, whose mother, Jackie Wagstaff, served on the board several years ago, came in second with 1,869 votes, or 28 percent of the vote.

Jimmy Doster, who raised more than $17,000, the most of any candidate in the race and ran an aggressive campaign, received just 905 votes.

Diaminah, who was endorsed by local and state teachers' associations and the INDY, received $9,500 in campaign contributions.

Terrence Scarborough and DeWarren Langley came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In District 1, Mike Lee ousted incumbent Omega Curtis Parker by a margin of 60 percent to 32 percent. Thomas Poole came in third.

And in District 3, Matt Sears outlasted three candidates with charter or private school connections to win handily over the second-place finisher, Deborah Bryson, by a 58–21 percent margin.
