Youth Lagoon, Majical Cloudz

Using "youth" in your band name doesn't guarantee that your music espouses particularly youthful feelings, but Boise indie-pop project Youth Lagoon is practically drowning in them. Songwriter Trevor Powers still sings personal poetry in the same naive, kittenish mew he offered on his 2011 debut, The Year of Hibernation. But his music has grown in rapid spurts on this year's swell Wondrous Bughouse. The production is far better than on his previous bedroom recordings, with psychedelic touches building to the sort of headphone swirl Mercury Rev used to make. Majical Cloudz are another set of introverts just starting to own their sound. The Montreal duo leaps forward on their New Matador release Impersonator.Onthe arresting first single "Childhood's End," singer Devon Welsh articulates the shock of a sudden death in grave, sober baritone. Matthew Otto's subtle beats and strings don't compete for space; they just give his narrative some sense-memory detail—a quickened heartbeat, a glimpse of color, a gust of wind. —Jeff Klingman
