"Weird" Al Yankovic

When: Fri., June 28, 7 p.m. 2013

Those unfortunate enough to miss "Weird Al" Yankovic's concert in Raleigh a few months back can encounter the man, if not the music, when he signs his new children's picture book, My New Teacher and Me. The sands of time have shifted, revealing his 1989 film UHF as a cult classic and allowing many of his parody songs to overtake the originals they mocked. (Can anyone hear Greg Kihn's "Our Love's in Jeopardy" without thinking of Yankovic's "I Lost at Jeopardy," or Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" without being reminded of "Amish Paradise?") My New Teacher and Me pits the "unrestrained creativity" of a young student named Billy up against the "fixed worldview" of his new teacher—perhaps a haunting metaphor for the current state of the American educational system. Given the kid-friendly nature of this appearance, we advise fans not to question Yankovic about the various scandals that have plagued his career, such as Coolio expressing mild disdain at "Amish Paradise" or his dropping of his trademark glasses after laser eye surgery. Man, that was a harrowing Behind the Music episode. This is a signing-line ticket event that requires a purchase of the book for a ticket. —Zack Smith
