REGULATOR BOOKSHOP—A former Independent Weekly writer, L.D. Russell related 9/11 and the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. in these pages in December 2001 like so: "Dale's death was a more intimate loss, wrapped now in a greater tragedy. Grief takes its toll, even as it takes its time." After Earnhardt died, Russell—now a lecturer in religious studies at Elon University—explored the fascination with Sunday afternoon and the constant specter of sudden death it offered from a symbolic and theological perspective. Russell will read from and sign copies of Godspeed: Racing Is My Religion, his intriguing navigation through that research and his own speed-born enthusiasm, at 7 p.m. Admission is free. —Grayson Currin
