Mary Timony & The Twilight Sad
Kings—Independent record labels are a bit like college sports teams: Necessity (presence of NCAA rules in one case, lack of money in another) dictates that there's no such thing as a legacy. Just when you have the team you want, people quit or jump to the majors: Sigur Ros was the Trajan Langdon of British label Fat Cat, and Animal Collective was its Elton Brand. Both bands have been drafted up. Never fear: Glasgow's explosive The Twilight Sad (along with Chapel Hill's David Karsten Daniels) are Fat Cat's diaper dandies. On their debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, the freshmen offer the poise of an old point guard, combining post-punk edge with post-rock textures with incisive pop hooks (think Coldplay, only sharper). They're as ambitious sonically as they are melodically. Let's just hope they age better than Bobby Hurley. Mary Timony headlines. Noncanon opens. Tickets are $7 for the 10 p.m. show. —Grayson Currin
